Could Your Dog Benefit from CBD?

As more and more humans are discovering the medicinal benefits of CBD, some people are starting to treat their dogs’ ailments with CBD as well. Here is everything you need to know about how CBD affects dogs, when it would be most useful, and if there are any associated risks:

How CBD Affects Dogs

Cannabidiol (CBD) interacts with your dog’s body through the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is a series of neurons that are found throughout your dog’s body. Once CBD enters the system, it binds to receptors that produce the different responses we see as medicinal benefits.

When Should It Be Used?

Many dogs can benefit from being given CBD oil on a regular basis or as needed. One of the most popular reasons dog owners turn to CBD oil is to reduce their dog’s anxiety, which can be caused by loud noises (fireworks on July 4th), separation, past trauma, or a number of other factors. Additionally, CBD has been found to help prevent arthritis in dogs because it has an anti-inflammatory effect that stops your dogs joints from swelling. Studies have also shown that CBD is highly effective in reducing the severity and frequency of seizures in dogs, and it can help in the fight against canine cancer because CBD inhibits the cell growth of tumors. Finally, most dogs do not have the issue of eating too little, but if yours does because of a health condition or otherwise, CBD can help increase their appetite so they are able to consume all of their needed nutrition.

Are There Any Risks?

While CBD oil has been shown to be safe for both dogs and humans, your dog may still experience some mild side effects after ingesting. These can include dry mouth, lowered blood pressure, which could cause a feeling of lightheadedness, and drowsiness. Additionally, anytime you start your pet on a new supplement, there is a risk of allergic reaction, so be sure to have an antihistamine and your veterinarian’s phone number on hand the first couple times you give CBD to your dog.

What CBD Products Should Be Used?

We recommend giving your dog our Hempz dog chews or using our Remedy 500 mg Tincture for your dog. You can use the included dropper to place the appropriate amount of Remedy in your dog’s mouth to absorb. For a dog that is 35-50 pounds, use ⅓ ml daily, for one that is 50-75 pounds, use ½ ml daily, for a dog that is 75-100 pounds, use ¾-1 ml daily, and for a large dog that is over 100 pounds, use 1-1 ½ ml every day.
